Lightning is the John Cena of Final Fantasy

Since Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning's manufactured popularity has skyrocket in Japan (obviously most likely due to her been  forced down everyone's throats in almost every major Square Enix announcement.) She's not only the main character of her respective series but has also graced various spin-offs and popular media, but when is enough, enough?

Claire Farron has indeed been utterly milked dried this generation and with the Final Fantasy XIII saga finally coming to a close after five long years you'd think the poor lass would finally have some quality time to rest but you're dead wrong..

In a recent Siliconera interview, Director of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Motomu Toriyama had a few things to say in regards to his favourite Final Fantasy heroine and her future in the video game industry..

"For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters. So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character." - Toriyama
The obsession with Lightning was cute at first but a line has to be drawn at some point. It's like Lightning has become SE's latest mascot in one mouthful and the ride just never stops. Unfortunately her more charismatic comrades were never given the equal opportunity in contrast. So in conclusion we can all agree that Lightning is indeed the new Cid and John Cena's long lost sister. In other news Lightning Returns again and again.

  1. The only "guest" characters in mainline Final Fantasy should be Biggs and Wedge and the name Cid. That's it. A Main character of a mainline FF should never become a "guest character" in future FF titles. That defeats the purpose.

  2. Kingdom Hearts 3 as a cameo is the ONLY time I'd accept Lightning appearing in a game after LR: FFXIII. She needs to disappear.

  3. As someone who actually likes the character Lightning, I think it's time she was put to rest - she's had 3 games worth of screen-time, a titular role in Dissidia 012, and a whole quest line about her in Realm Returns. Time to put some focus on new characters Square-Enix.

  4. Not really surprising since she ended up getting three games (and how much Toriyama loves Lightning). I personally think that Lightning is a pretty bland character but I'm sure that's just me.

  5. Square-Enix has a lot of characters that are better than Lightning in every possible way, and her games weren't even that good or memorable. It makes me wonder why the hell she's such a figurehead for the company now. It's already past time to stop trying to force her on others, S-E.

  6. Please, I am completely okay with Lightning, but for the love of everything good in this world put her to rest. Square Enix wore us out with Cloud and now they are running Lightning to the ground. She took most of the spotlight in Dissidia 012, she's cameo'd in XIV with her own event, she's got three games, some novels. Close the book on her for now. Let a new character get their time.

  7. I have heard reports and this may sound crazy to some but i have heard the CEO of square enix is in love with lightning……. So i am not surprised by this at all in the slightest. Of course its a fucking stupid move but hey its square enix. I have given up on them a very long time…. I also dont want them to remake any of the final fantasy because i do not trust square enix to screw them up.

  8. The way they seem to be pushing the whole 13 saga and Lightning feels like a bit much especially because of how divided fans of the series seem to be. If you like her and whatnot, then fine. More power to you. From one gamer to another, I'm legitimately glad you're having fun.

I...I just don't see it. At all. Lightning is just so mind bogglingly bland to me. But whatever. it's all opinions and shit at the end of the day so meh. Personally though, I would love them to show some love to half the characters throughout the series a fraction of the love they've shown Lightning.

  9. I didn't mind XIII and have no strong feelings about Lightning one way or the other, but even I'm beginning to grow tired of their infatuation with this one character.

Popular or not, she's been featured in three console titles, numerous spin-offs and a cameo in XIV. Let her rest and focus your attention on new games and new characters.

  10. Square came to that conclusion because of a poll on their Japan facebook page. So yes, she's extremely popular among the people who are fanboyish enough to follow their japanese facebook page, which probably consists of exclusively of people who like FF13.

  11. I like how the title "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" sounds like they're saying,"Don't worry, everyone! Lightning's back!". I don't want to hear about her for a VERY good long time

  12. Just stop with the Lightning already, please! You gave her 3 games, you put her in the FFXIV, you're putting her in FFX-and/or X-2 all while being part of the least-respected FF games. Square Enix is like an oblivious mother trying to make me date the fat chick. I'm not gonna' like her like that! Even if she is "kind of fun".

  13. Ok. I don't hate Lightning but her potential to be one of FF's best characters was utterly squandered in her mainline series.

Her showing up as a guest character in games like Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts is fine with me. But S-E should be putting a bullet into the face of FFXIII's elements under consideration for future FF titles.

  14. I want to see their research that supports the notion that Lightning is an extremely popular character. I guess when you shove her in our faces and don't listen to fans that you could believe it. I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII but boy would I be lying if I said Lightning was a highlight of the game.

  15. With rare exceptions of recurring characters (Cid, Biggs, Wedge, etc), characters should not appear in FF games other than their own. Lightning does not belong in other games nor would she add much to them.

  16. She's pretty much the female equivalent to Cloud: a strong "badass" super-soldier. But other than that, she comes across as a bit of a shallow character. However, like I said above, some don't seem to realize just how many fangirls that Lightning has, because of the whole 'girl power' fantasy she provides (although sexualizing her somewhat in Lightning Returns didn't seem to go down too well).
